How to Use 1040 Flow Lab
Pick a level and a case study, then either watch the return being built (Guided Walkthrough) or build it yourself (Practice).
1. Choose Your Level and Case
Basic: W-2s, interest, dividends, stock sales, a freelance business, itemized deductions, children and the new 2025 deductions.
Intermediate: adds child care, education credits, Social Security, pensions and IRAs, the earned income credit and retirement savings.
Advanced: adds rentals and passive losses, partnership, S corporation and trust K-1s, the QBI wage limits, foreign tax credit, Additional Medicare Tax, net investment income tax and AMT.
Each level has five cases. Your Student ID gives you your own numbers; New Version gives fresh numbers for the same case. Demo has fixed numbers.
2. Find Your Practice Documents
The documents for your case (W-2s, 1099s, K-1s, receipts) are the slips on the left. Click More Boxes on a slip to see every box.
Download Case Documents saves them as an Excel file. To practise with your own made-up return, edit the slips, add documents, or import a filled-in template. Use fictional names and SSNs starting with 000.
3. Guided Walkthrough
Press Next step (or →). Each step works out one line, on whichever form it belongs to, and shows the rule and the math. Use the step list to jump around.
Each form has a Scope & Assumptions panel under its title: what the lab includes, leaves out and assumes for that form.
The tabs above the return show every form this return uses. Hover any line for where it comes from and where it goes next. Lines marked ★ changed for 2025.
4. Practise and Check
Switch to Practice. Every line this return needs becomes a box, on the 1040 and on each schedule.
Work through the schedules first, then the 1040, using the documents. Whole dollars; commas and $ signs are fine; enter losses with a minus sign.
Press Check My Answers. Green lines match; red lines don't, with a hint. Answers within $1 are accepted for rounding.
